There are just certain moments you want to document... first birthdays, first steps, first day of school, first tooth fairy visit. As a lifestyle photographer with a photojournalistic style, I live for these big events. These memories are what turn a good photo into precious documentation. Parents reach out to me a lot, asking my thoughts on how to go about their child's first "birthday" portrait and my advice remains the same: Put some cute clothes on your kid, pick a meaningful spot and let him/her lead the way. Let me capture them as they are. Images documenting milestones will remain timeless, you can count on that.
A portrait session commemorating a very first birthday is pretty high on the wish list of lots of mommies... but the milestones babies have hit their first year vary vastly from child to child. You never quite know how a one year old will react to the camera and their skill set can change from day to day and depend on their surroundings and who is around. I was so excited to learn that this little sweetheart had began walking just days before our session; Mom scheduled this thinking her cooperative little crawler would be fairly easy to pose but her mini-me had big plans for roaming free! For me, that is even better. Not shown in these images? Mom with outstretched arms ready to catch her little and an over-achieving auntie behind me making silly faces and rattling favorite toys. These tiny wobbles were so precious. Sit. Clap. Stand. Clap. Step. Clap. Repeat. A big thank you to this mama for letting me document these perfectly miraculous moments. And to the loving auntie that made my job so easy. Happy First Birthday sweet girl!
